You can find bugs at level 4, and more at level 6 I think. Grasshoppers, cockroaches, crickets, and worms. Not sure at which level you can find worms. All of the above are 100% disabled in winter though. In winter all you find is wood and stones. I've not tried fishing with anything but the spear. Spears are basically infinite in supply. I look at any tree and see about 6 to 10 spears lol. They attack really fast with little delay in between hits. They consume little stamina so you can consistently clear hordes with them. Just go axes or long blunt or long blade if you have loot up. I use them from beginning to end. If you keep knives on you you can craft them from things you find all over the place, branches or planks you find from broken doors, furniture you break down, or logs you saw into planks.
