406 sbc vs 383. my experience with sbc vs bbc. when mildly modified, if you have say a 400" sbc (406-434) and a 400" bbc (396-427) If both engines make the same amount of hp, say a 500 hp 434 sbc and a 500 hp 427, the small block will build more torque than the big block. that contradicts most all beliefs about sbc vs bbc.

The problem with "More cubes" is that the 400 block can be more fragile than the 350 block. There's also hugely more 350 cores to select from than 400 cores. Now, if you're using an aftermarket block, no …

In the GM Performance Parts catolog it says "When tested on a 383 ci small block engine with 9.5 to 1 compression ratio and .540" lift roller cam, single plane intake manifold and 750 cfm Holley carburator, the Fast Burn heads produced 497 hp at an incredibly low 5,800 rpm". ... Once the optimal timing of 35-degrees was found the 383 stroker belched out it's best pull of 439 hp at 5,900 rpm and 449 lb-ft of twist at 4,300 rpm. But as one would expect ...Basically, the initial price difference of $1,248 is worth an additional 4 lb-ft of torque and 62 hp, and you can run on 87-octane fuel. when you calculate all the parts required to build a reliable 500hp-600hp SBC , then calculate the cost of building a similar power level in a BBC that in many cases can be built with more easily sourced, (like a stock 454 BBC vs a expensively modified 406 SBC)or even modified stock BBC components, you'll rapidly see why Id suggest building a BBC ...Still, with a 350 Chevy (3.48" stroke), a 6.125" rod (5.7" is stock) can be used with no problems, with the correct piston of course. For a 383 (3.75" stroke), you'd probably want to limit it to 6" for street. I use a 6" rod with a 3.80" stroke in my LT1 that does put the pin slightly into the oil ring land. One benefit of the 6.0 rod is a lighter bobweight and potentially easier balancing. Some will mention less side loading on the cyl wall also. I chose 5.7 for my 383 - something about the oil ring through the pin bore I was uncomfortable with, though I realize it's not really an issue.SBC Comp Cam RETRO STYLE (FLAT NOSE) HYDRAULIC ROLLER 510/525 Lift 230/238 Duration 111 Lobe Sep. Sure you can build them "cheap", I did up a 406 for 1500.00 top too bottom, but in the end i was disappointed, Any decent engine these days will not be cheap IF you want power out of it & want it to last. I guess its up to your conditions though. Most SBC's run very good with around 34-36* total ignition timing at WOT --- usually 20-22 degrees mechanical advance + base timing set at around 12-14*. If you have a very lumpy cam and want to smooth it out just weld up the slots so you get only 14-16* mechanical advance available - then set your base timing at 20* so you still have 34-36* at ...

All these rod-length and compression-height combos will produce an overall assembled height of 9.008 inches, which allows roughly .017-inch piston-to-deck clearance with a stock deck height of 9.025 inches. In this example, the 6.00-inch rod requires a compression height of 1.133 inches (SRP's 6.00-inch rod pistons use 1.125 inches). This was one of the (unfortunately) rare times a car rag actually did tests over several manufacturers. They took a garden variety 500 HP 383 SBC and started swapping intakes. The dual planes were tested with a different (smaller) cam than the single planes. For the Edelbrock RPM Air Gap they ran tests with both cams.As long as you can gasket for .040 piston to head, the actual deck clearance won't effect your compression ration.
